Perry Hoogendijk was born in Zeist, The Netherlands, in 1971. He started playing the Tenor Tuba when he was nine years old, receiving his first lessons from his father. After a while he switched to Bass Tuba and attended the Academy of Music Hilversum, where he received his degree in performance and teaching. At this institute he also received, in 1996, his degree in conducting wind bands.
Subsequently, Perry continued his studies in Germany, at the Academies of Essen and Detmold, with Hans Nickel, (at present Principal Tuba at WDR Radio Symphony Orchestra). Also, Perry studied in Chicago, Ill., USA, where he took classes with Rex Martin, Gene Pokorny and Charles Vernon. He also attended one of the last given master classes of the legendary Tuba player and brass-pedagogue, Arnold Jacobs.
In July 1997, Perry was invited by the world famous Tuba soloist Roger Bobo to play, as an “emerging young artist”, a solo recital at the international Tuba Conference in Riva del Garda, Italy. In December 1999 Perry took part in an international Tuba competition in Sydney, Australia, where he was awarded third place.
From 1996 to 2004, Perry played the Tuba in the North Holland Philharmonic. In September 2004, he was appointed Principal Tuba at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Besides, he teaches at the Sweelinck Academy in Amsterdam.
As a soloist, Perry often performs with amateur wind ensembles and symphony orchestras, and is also active as a low-brass coach and teacher. In February 2006, Perry acted as a visiting lecturer for the Tuba class of Rex Martin at Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill.. Here he also played a solo recital, where the composition ‘Pocket Suite for Tuba and Percussion’, by Konrad Koselleck, which Perry commissioned, was first performed. |
